Envisioning a world transformed through the power of nature and of art

Manship Artists Residency is dedicated to the preservation of an environmentally- and historically significant site that has been given new life as an international, interdisciplinary artists residency for the benefit of the community and visitors to Cape Ann.

Manship Artists values those who challenge us to think differently and aims to create an environment where creativity and questions are encouraged and where all are welcome.

If you want to play an integral role in building our creative community,

please join us in supporting the work of visiting and local artists.

One powerful way to do this is to join the Prometheus Circle, a group of donors who contribute $1000 or more annually to support operations and the development of programming at the Manship Artists Residency.

We are excited to announce that Manship Artists Residency was awarded an NEA CHALLENGE AMERICA grant to support an artists residency! We will be using this grant to help support the residencies of five women artists of color who are creating the Vessels of Slavery project, a collaboration between the Artists, the Cape Ann Museum, and the Manship Artists Residency.

Vessels of Slavery is an ongoing, participatory art project undertaken by IlaSahai Prouty, Christle Rawlins-Jackson, Sika Foyer, Susi Ryan and LD Rackard. In addiction to the National Endowment for the Arts, this project has been partially funded by MassHumanities, Essex National Heritage Commission, and the Prometheus Circle.

Artistic Legacy

Best known as the creator of the Prometheus Fountain at Rockefeller Center, Paul Manship developed this Lanesville estate which he dubbed Starfield on the site of two former working quarries. Paul, his son John and daughter-in-law Margaret Cassidy shared a love for this special place on Cape Ann. Link to history of the property by historian Prudence Fish.

Conserving Open Space

This idyllic 15-acre property boasts two pristine quarries, scenic vistas, rocky summits, and over 5 acres of forested land. MARS is dedicated to protecting  these natural habitats which contribute to the quality of life on the property and in the community.

Creative Placekeeping

MARS is contributing to the revival of the artistic community which once flourished here. MARS is engaged in two years of pilot programming with an artists residency program at its core. Through its artists retreats and funded residencies, community engagement, public offerings such as performances and exhibitions, as well as workshops and rentals, MARS will sustain this site and allow it to thrive with new creative energy.
