Educational Initiatives

The Manship Artists Residency is dedicated to encouraging creative learning. The educational initiatives of Manship evolved from a desire to fulfill the needs of our creative community and support artists of all ages on Cape Ann. We strive to enrich the creative and cultural heritage of Cape Ann and continue its tradition as a place dedicated to community and art-making.

Manship recognizes the important work of artists who shape the future of our community, in particular the Gloucester Public Schools art teachers who have dedicated themselves to cultivating the next generation. In support of their work, Manship coordinates professional development days and supplements the resources available to its students.

Manship’s authentic Folly Cove Designer Press is now on loan at the O’Maley Innovation Middle School and is available to students as part of an exceptional collaboration between the Manship Artists Residency, the Cape Ann Museum, and the Gloucester Education Foundation.

More about The Acorn Press

Originally owned by Eino Natti, an in-law of Paul Manship and a member of the Folly Cove Designers, the historic Acorn Press was once a local cultural icon at Rockport’s Whistlestop Mall since the mid-1970s. The press preserves Cape Ann’s local heritage while allowing the Manship Artists Residency to continue this tradition with contemporary artists in the community.

Teacher Highlight: Lorrinda Cerrutti

“This professional development was by far one of the most valuable experiences I have had while working at the Gloucester Public Schools. It not only introduced me to an art medium that I had no prior experience in, but in speaking with the instructors I also learned so much about HOW to go about majoring in this medium … During this time we were able to share ideas and materials (with our fellow teachers), something that we never have time for. This time together is so important and benefits our students more than us as educators.”
