The Residency Program

The site of the Manship Artists Residency was once the summer retreat of Paul Manship, the sculptor of the Prometheus Fountain at Rockefeller Center. Many of the same opportunities and qualities that attracted Manship to Cape Ann are available to those who come here today seeking an escape into a restorative natural setting to spark their inner muse.

Our Location Offers Ample Opportunities

The Manship Artists Residency is situated in Lanesville, Gloucester at Starfield, a fifteen-acre property featuring historic buildings, two pristine quarries, scenic vistas, rocky summits, and over five acres of forested land.

Have Time And Space To Create

The core mission of the Manship Artists Residency is to support artists, innovators, and thinkers. We provide time and space for residents to conduct research, create new works, incubate new ideas, and restore their creative spirit.

Cape Ann offers resident artists the unique opportunity to choose from an array of cultural, historical, scientific, and industrial resources. Artists can attend professional development classes with local artists, work in independent labs or specialized studios, present a public project to the community or conduct a workshop, make a presentation, participate in public forums, or engage with the community in other ways.

Given the nature and layout of the property, Starfield offers an exceptional opportunity for performing and contemporary visual artists to share their work with the public — whether through performances, exhibitions, or events. “Magical” is the word that most use to describe Starfield, a place where residents and visitors find inspiration and enchantment, and where they long to return again and again.

Hear What Other Residents Have To Say

My expectations [for my residency] were exceeded. Not only were the grounds beautiful and inspiring, the house itself felt like a "personality" with many stories to tell, a place where creativity was celebrated. I felt challenged and encouraged to "step up my game" as an artist.

The site and circumstances took me back to something and somewhere I hadn't been in a long time. I don’t even know how to articulate it yet. I felt I was in a place where art had a history and was important for itself, not for it's commercial potential. It was almost shocking and had to do with the...historical significance of Paul Manship and his being in Gloucester.

As with many artist residencies, the idea that you are working in a place or community where other artists have worked and drawn inspiration from, is very powerful. In addition to the physical beauty of the Cape Ann region, it is the community where the FCDs lived and worked. The impact this group has had on the region is still felt and being in this community is impactful on the work that I have been interested in.

The beauty and serenity of the outdoor space and the warmth and comfort of the house were incredibly inspiring to me. I journal often but here I was able to make it an every day practice while sitting on the rocks overlooking the quarry. I felt free to explore language in a way I am often too rushed to consider and each day felt like a gift to have the open ended space to explore writing without the need to accomplish anything specific.
