The Volker Goetze Quartet
with Uthpala Eroshan
Saturday, JUNE 15, 2024
Doors open 5:30 pm
Performance 6:00-7:30 pm
This long-awaited debut of new music by the Volker Goetze Quartet, features world renowned Sri Lankan drummer Uthpala Eroshan live in concert. A gorgeous experiment in cross-cultural collaboration, “Musical Crossroads” brings together the traditions of Jazz and Kandyan percussion to create a new musical started vision born at the Manship Artist Residency in 2023, and now ready to be shared with the world.
International touring artist Volker Goetze’s new musical compositions transform ancient Sri Lankan folk tales inspired by Kandyan traditional dances into a contemporary context. They highlight stories of reincarnation, sacrifice and selfless devotion. The ensemble unites prolific clarinetist Oran Etkin, versatile bassist Alexis Cuadrado and Sri Lankan guru Uthpala Eroshan. Each musician brings his own richly informed cultural intelligence to the group’s sound, which is especially distinguished by the unique timbre of the Gata Bera, a Sri Lankan ceremonial drum played by Eroshan. Goetze’s quartet takes the listener on magical voyages driven by the mesmerizing cadence of Eroshan’s rhythms. Omitting a traditional drum set from this jazz quartet creates an unusually open field of opportunity for exciting horn solos and group improvisations over pulsing bass and Gata Bera grooves.
