Manship Artists Residency is thrilled to welcome poet Robert Pinsky and multi-instrumentalist Stan Strickland to the Starfield stage on Thursday, August 24th at 7 p.m. for a collaborative evening of music and poetry. The performance, entitled New Poems Heartbeat + Rhyme, will feature new poems from Pinsky, backed by the melodious sounds of Strickland, the harmonic excursions of keyboardist Russell Hoffman, and the Latin rhythms of percussionist Ricardo Monzon. Navigating spoken word and instrumental jazz, Pinsky and Strickland’s previous live ventures in jazz-poetry have oscillated between the expected and the avant-garde, flouting genre conventions in pursuit of improvisatory magic. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness two modern masters of sound play outside the limits of language! Tickets are available at manshipartists.org – location details and directions will be provided with your reservation confirmation.
Robert Pinsky served three terms as the United States Poet Laureate, founding the Favorite Poem Project during his time in office. A recipient of the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry and the William Carlos Williams award from the Poetry Society of America, Pinsky has maintained a commitment to bolstering the place of poetry in American culture over his illustrious career. He currently serves as the Director of the Graduate Creative Writing Program at Boston University. The intersection between jazz improvisation and poetic performance has always fascinated Pinsky, and Starfield is delighted to play host to the poet’s next exploration of this theme.
Vocalist, saxophonist, and Manship Artist Stan Strickland brings decades of jazz experience to Starfield. An influential member of the Boston scene since the 1970s, Strickland has also performed extensively overseas, playing with musical greats including Pharaoh Sanders, Aretha Franklin, and Herbie Mann. Offstage, Strickland is a member of the faculty at the Berklee School of Music and the Co-Executive Director of Express Yourself, an organization working to provide art immersion opportunities for children and adolescents with mental health struggles. Stan’s dedication to spreading joy through the power of music is visible every time he performs, and we are happy to welcome him back to Lanesville this August.
