Manship Artists Residency is pleased to announce CONTINUUM: Cape Ann Sculpture Today, an exhibition of work by artists who either live, work, or contribute to the creative community of Cape Ann. The exhibition will open on September 22 and run through October 29, 2023 and will feature sculpture throughout the Starfield property, as well as smaller-scale pieces inside the historic barn studio of Paul Manship.
This exhibition recalls a time in the mid 20th century when the property was teeming with creative activity. Paul Manship’s bronze sculptures dotted a landscape of granite and cultivated gardens, including espaliered pear trees and lush grape arbors. Manship hosted festive gatherings of neighboring artists such as Walker Hancock, Katharine Lane Weems, George Demetrios, Virginia Lee Burton, and Leon Kroll.
CONTINUUM brings back this inspired energy, with an eclectic mix of sculpture in various mediums and styles that represent the rich creative culture which flourishes here. These seventeen contemporary artists use inventive methods to surprise and delight, each piece thoughtfully connecting with the striking surroundings.
