The Manship Artists Residency would like to recognize that while Starfield is celebrated today as the summer residence and studio of Paul Manship, we acknowledge that the lands on which the Manship Artists Residency is located was first the ancestral homeland of an Algonquian tribe.
The native people, known as the Pawtucket, migrated seasonally between Lowell, Massachusetts and the coasts of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. It was the Pawtucket who began the fishing tradition from these rocky shores that is still carried on today.
The 15+ acre Manship site is also graced with two beautiful, water-filled granite quarries that represent the industry and sacrifice of local quarry workers. Thus, when Paul Manship and his family came to start summering here in 1945, they became part of and contributed to a vibrant past that we continue to honor and celebrate today.
